Writing and Remixes Journal #1

What is writing? What is a remix? Is there a connection between the two? What are your expectations for this course? What do you hope to gain out of this course?

Writing is the process of someone expressing his or her feelings, ideas, and/or fantasies on paper. In my opinion, it is a type of art captured in words rather than visual elements. Writing is a process that is never made perfect and requires creativity that is different in every person. A remix is someone “reforming” or “improving” someone else’s original idea and making it his or her own in a unique way. This original idea could be an invention, a piece of art, an essay, or, the most popular, a song. For example, if an artist comes out with a hit song, then another artist or person can use the same beat but change the lyrics to their own liking. Famous rappers like Lil Wayne do this quite often. In 2008-2009 Lil Wayne produced an album called “No Ceilings.” Over fifty percent of the songs in the album were remixes; he used other rappers’ songs and beats and rapped different lyrics. Yes, I do think that there is a connection to both writing and remixes. All people have similar thoughts and ideas, but we all write and portray our thoughts in our own unique way. We improve ideas to make it our own in writing, just like a remix. In this course, I hope to gain better knowledge of the writing process as a whole. I also hope I can make my writing more concrete rather than abstract and to have better flow in my essays. I look forward to learning in this course.
